children and smoking

I read very interesting article, which was about influence of tobacco companies on children. In the past there were many adverts of tobacco product on Czech TV channels, but at present there aren’t any of these adverts. I think that it is prohibited, but I am not sure. But on the other side the movie actors are often smokers. They are famous for children (they are their heroes) and therefore the children can see the smoking as normal way of life. And it seems healthy. But we know, that it isn’t true. Another reasons why children smoke are, that they want to taste it, to be more interesting for their friends. Also they start with smoking, because their parents smoke. They don’t know, that it is so dangerous. It could case many healthy problems. The biggest problem is the cancer. They will find out it as adult, but it can be so late, because they already are hooked on cigarettes and they can have first healthy problems.

Hello everybody. Today I would like to say you something about education in Czech republic, Britain and the USA. You can use it as a preparation for a English final exam (as I).

School system in the Czech Republic
In the CR, school attendance is compulsory from the age of 6 till 15 (or 16). The school year starts on the 1st of September and ends on the 30th of June of the following year. A school day is different at different types of schools. The average number of lessons at the secondary school is around thirty a week, primary schools have fewer lessons, while specialized schools often have more. Classes begin between 8 and 8.15 and there are from 4 to 6 lessons in a row, followed by a lunch break, and the afternoon classes. Afternoon classes end between 4 and 5 at the latest. Breaks between lessons last from 5 to 15 minutest. Pupils and students are evaluated by marks from 1 to 5; 1 is the best, 5 is worst.
Education in our country includes these stages:
a) Pre - school education - In our country there are nursery schools for children from the age of 1 to 3 years. From the age of 3 to 6 children attend kindergarten. This pres-school education is not compulsory.
b) Primary education - From the age of 6 to 15 (or 16) children attend basic schools. There are 2 degrees there. The first degree is from the first to the fifth class. Children learn the 3 R's there: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic. Second degree is from the 6th to the 9th class. They learn Czech language and literature, foreign language, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, History, Geography, Civics, P.E., Music and Art.
c) Secondary education - Boys and girls over the age 15 (or) 16 attend secondary schools such as Grammar school, Special School and Vocational schools. At secondary school students are taught most of those subject as at basic school but they are expanded in their content. As for special subjects, they learn economics, typing, accounting, computers, and various kinds of laboratory work. Students often finish their studies with the school-leaving examination.
d) Tertiary education - Tertiary education refers to Universities and Technical Universities. Undergraduates can study a variety of subjects such as economics, journalism, medicine, music, art, foreign languages..
For those who do not want to enter the university there are various types of two-year training courses such as for managers, social workers, businessmen, specialized nurses..

School system in Great Britain
It’s different between Czech education system and British education system – f.e. Summer holiday in Britain is quite short, only six weeks. Education system is not same all over Britain. It’s different in Scotland and Wales. School is compulsory for children between the age of 5 to 16. Primary schools are for ages between 5 - 11 and Secondary schools are for ages over 11. Children under the age of five go to nursery school or a pre-school play group to prepare them for the start of compulsory education.
In Britain, 93% of pupils go to state schools. At the age of 16 about two thirds (2/3) of these pupils leave school and get jobs or apprenticeships. This system of education is free of charge. Some children take the Certificate of Secondary Education (C. S. E.) which means the satisfactory completion of school at the age of 16. More ambitious children take the examinations for the General Certificate of Secondary Education at ordinary level (GCSE - O level) - vocational school (mechanics, typing,…) or advanced level (GCSE - A level) at the age of 18. The GCSE - A level is the basic qualification to enter university.

Pupils in Great Britain have to wear the uniforms.
Boys wear trousers and jacket. Under the jacket they have shirt with tie and in winter they wear jumper.
Girls wear skirts and jacket. Under the jacket they have on blouse, sometimes ties and in winter jumper.

School system in the USA
In the USA there is not a national system of education. Each of the 50 states has its own laws regulating education. Children begin school at the age of 5 or 6 and continue until the age of 18. Every child gets minimum 13 years of education free of charge. Primary or grade school is from the 1st to 6th grades. Then students attend middle school for three years. After middle school, students attend secondary schools, which are called "high schools". The goal of secondary school is to get a high school diploma. Students should take on average 17 or over 20 units during their studies. Marks in most US schools are A, B, C, D, and F with an A being excellent and an F being failure. During the final year of high school, most students take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) which is a national college entrance examination. The results of this test will determine if the student should continue on to attend a college or university and it is used by universities to decide which students to accept.

And now, I would like to say you something about my education until now.
When I was four years old, it was in 1991, I was at kindergarten. Two years later I attend the basic school, which called ZŠ 17.listopadu in Kopřivnice. In the first degree I learned Writing, Reading and Arithmetic. In the second degree I learned Czech language, English, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, History, Geography, Civics, P.E., Music and Art. Every time I hadn’t any problem. I always passed with a distinction. My favorites subjects was Math, P.E., Art and sometimes it was English too. When I was 15, it was in 2003, I passed exam for a study at Grammar School. And now I’m in my fourth year of Grammar School. And after my final exam I want continue to study in University.

I try to describe my common lesson. Every lesson takes three quarters of an hour. I choose one of my subject and it’s Czech language. This subject we have four times a week. In the grammar part we take dictation and analyze sentence structure. In the literature part we learn about the works of Czech and foreign authors. I have to say that analyzing poetry and prose is not so interesting for me.

There is one problem. Do you know, what can influence student's performance and how? I tried to think about this. I think that there is many causes of it. Some students don’t have any time for preparing to school, because they have many hobbies ( as sport, singing, painting..). Some of them can’t learn to school because they have some problems in family. And some of them are lazy to learn to school. I thing that I’m not anyone of them, maybe sometimes I don’t have too much time for learning to school, because I have a volleyball training.

There are activities in our school, which everybody can do. For those who like playing volleyball, there is a volleyball group, which meets regularly once a week (at Thursday). Personally I go there when I have free time and don’t have to learn to school. Another group in our school is called OUTDOOR, it’s for those who like adventure. I can’t tell you more about this group, because I don’t meet with them. For those who like singing and can it, there is school choir. It’s a pity, but they don’t want me. Do you know why?:o) I think that it’s all. Every of this activities are gratis, of course.

Film movie

Films movie
I saw very interesting film – The Da Vinci Code a few days ago. This film interest me so much and that’s why I try to write something about it. I found many informations about this film on the web site http://www.imdb.com/.
The Da Vinci Code
Adapted from Dan Brown's bestseller book, the story tells the investigation started by symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and a good looking cryptologist, Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), around the murder of a Museum Louvre's curator. In fact, the unfortunate murdered man was Sophie's grandfather, and the corpse was founded with a series of symbols and codes, like a pentagram and a Fibonacci number sequence. But police detective Fache (Jean Reno) will begin to chase Langdon, who escapes after receive a warning about the captain's real intentions. Sophie has with her a kind of key with dots and number 24 engraved on it, which opens to her and Langdon a big complex investigation, that involves a supposedly heretic theory: JesusChristh and Mary Magdalene were, in fact, a couple which give rise a daughter, named Sara. A millenarian sect called The Priory of Sion, has kept for centuries the secret of that matter. A masochist and kind of psychopath albino monk, Sibilas (Paul Bettany), an Opus Dei member, will chase Langdon and Shophie as well, in order to impede that they solve the mystery of Christ and Mary Magdalene, and also the real meaning and location of the Holy Grial. A passionate British researcher (Sir Ian McKellen), will help Langdon in his quest, revealing them several symbolisms at Da Vinci's master work The Last Supper, traveling to mythical places in the UK, like The Church Temple, where is believed that a group of Templars Knights are buried, and Sir Isaac Newton's tomb at Westminster Abbey, where are located some of the main keys to solve the Holy Grial's mystery.
Runtime: 149 min
Awards: 3 nominations
Cast overview: Tom Hanks (Dr. Robert Langdon ), Audrey Tautou (Agent Sophie Neveu ), Ian McKellen (Sir Leigh Teabing), Jean Reno (Captain Bezu Fache ), Paul Bettany (Silas ), Alfred Molina (Bishop Manuel Aringarosa ), Jürgen Prochnow (Andre Vernet ), Jean-Yves Berteloot (Remy Jean ), Etienne Chicot (Lt. Collet ), Jean-Pierre Marielle (Jacques Saunière ), Marie-Françoise Audollent (Sister Sandrine ), Rita Davies (Elegant Woman at Rosslyn ), Francesco Carnelutti (Prefect ), Seth Gabel (Michael ), Shane Zaza (Youth on Bus ).
My opinion: I have read the book The Da Vinci Code and I have to say, that it was more exciting than the film. I admire Dan Brown, that he was able to imagine such spellbinding story. I have to say that I believe him it a little.

Review of my trip to Prague

Review of my trip to Prague
Last weekend me and my class were on the school trip in Prague. Prague, how we know, is the capital city of the Czech Republic, the seat of the President, government and parliament and it is the political, cultural and economic centre of the country. We were there three days. For me it was very exciting and funny. Now I try to describe what we did, where we went and so on.: We left Nový Jičín for Prague at 4 o’clock a.m. We went by train about five hours. It was quite boring, but we looked forward to Prague and that’s why it didn’t embarrass us. After we arrived to Prague we went to Žižkov, where we were an accomodation. This accommodation was really awful. After it we went to the Petřín Hill. Someone of us went upstairs on Petřín Hill, but I didn’t. Then we went along Neruda Street to the Lesser Town below. The Lesser Town is a poetic quarter with houses and palaces and romantic gardens. From the square we easily got to Charles Bridge over the river Vltava. It is very old bridge, it was build in 14th century. In the evening we went to the theatre performance to “Pod Palmovkou” theatre. After it we were in one Prague’s pub, it was “Blue point”. Second day we went to the National museum, there we could see interesting exhibit. It was about old civilization and about “ Věstonická Venuše”. There we could see an exhibition of many different kinds of animal and minerals in the museum. In the evening we went to the 3D cinema IMAX. After that we had a free time. Boys went to some pub and we walked to the “Night Prague”. It was really amazing. We went through the Charles Bridge, there were many beggars. We were on the Old Town Square. There are the Old Town Hall and the Horologe – it was founded in 1338. In the top part of the horologe, the 12 apostles appear every hour. But in this time, when we were there, they didn’t appear. We didn’t understand it, but we thought that it was haywire. Third day we had a guided in the theatre “ Stavovské” and than we were in the building of senate. At 3 o’clock p.m. my class left Prague for Nový Jičín. But me and my friend Zuzka stayed in Prague longer. We went to the Congress Centrum, where we met my cousin Michal. We slept at his apartment. In the evening we went together to the disco. It was very funny. We danced all night. And in the Saturday morning we met up with my cousin Hanka. We did shopping and at about 3 o’clock p.m. me and Hanka left Prague. We went by bus of Student Agency. We were so tired, we slept perhaps the whole journey. Zuzka staid in Prague one more day. It was really great trip for me. I enjoyed that, we had so much free times to buy something, or do something, or see some sights, which I wanted. It’s the pity that it’s over.
